Rage Comics
What is a genre? A genre is all..shared conventions. Genre is also a way of expressing yourself through cultural products and consists of Style & Form (Van Luyn,2013). Facebook, is in a way the most popular website where you can clearly highlight the concept of self-narratives. 'In a series of analysis, the researchers from BROG (Blog Research OnGenre project) have tested hypotheses about blogs, taking note of forms (e.g., "filter-style" vs. "Personal Journal") and features, including hyper-links, photographs and other non-text media, and comments pages' (McNeill, 2011)If you browse the web daily you must be aware of “rage face” memes. These faces with their quotes, are used to express feelings and emotions through a comic way. It is said to be an impersonal way of communicating. These posts on Facebook collects many likes and comments and are becoming more and more popular and the reason is simply because 'The comics are typically used to tell stories about real life experiences, and end with a humorous punchline' stated Sav, Database Moderator and Rage Comicologist.
These 'Meme Faces' is a concrete idea of how language and communication are changing and are adopting wider meanings and interpretations on the Virtual Network World. Moreover, even if 'Meme Faces' is a worldwide idea, in other countries such as in Mauritius, we have the 'Mauritroll' which is of the same concept but with different expressions and mixed language; English, Creole & French-Creole. This is to emphasize on the fact that, language and communication are continuously developing.
Will there be an end to this development?or, will it continue to develop and adapt/interpret communication differently? Is this kind of virtual development killing the real genre? Only time will tells us. Meanwhile, we wait and enjoy our communication on virtual networks.
