The question we might ask ourself is how Facebook uses our information to target ads? Well everything happens when you're online and OFFLINE. The way Facebook targets ads is based on all the information you provide according to your Facebook Profile information: Your age, location, education, relationship status and much more are available to advertisers that can access to aggregate data and reach the right audience. But what happen when you don't like or share anything? Facebook use your friends to fill the gap.
How does Facebook make money? Most of the money Facebook get is from the ads. The purpose of Ads, is to reach the exact audience they want with relevant information.Technology is a fundamental enabling force in the globalizing of economic activities (Dicken, 2007) More and more businesses are using Promoted Tweets and Facebook posts because they work. While traditional banners are pretty much ignored (clicked to 0.2 percent at a time. Promoted Tweets show engagement of one to 3 percent- up to 15 times as effective stated Ryan Holmes, CEO at Hootsuite.
People uses Facebook as a way to promote their business that's why there's a diversity in ads. You have ads on food, stuff, nature, people, medications, assurance, relationships... You can order on Facebook, shop on Facebook, have an appointment on Facebook... All this is due to the power of Ads. Ads influences people a lot and encourage them to promote the Ads.

Laetitia,
ReplyDeleteAs a user of Facebook myself, I see every day how much of a role ads have in this particular virtual network. I am in support of companies advertising their brands and items on Facebook as in today’s modern times, utilising the power of technology and the internet is an extremely successful way to advertise your company (The Economist, 2012). However, the way in which Facebook uses targeted ads to promote certain products to specific people I personally find to be somewhat obtrusive. Although I see where companies and Facebook are coming from, I still do not particularly like the fact that just because I am female and of a particular age these companies think I am interested in their products or services. I get the sense that every single move or comment I make on the site is being constantly watched and analysed in order to further advertise items and other stuff to me, despite if I am interested or not.
