Power
The virtual network I have joined is facebook, one I have
been part of for some years now and only joined because the attention and most
of my friends joined and abandoned MySpace. The power of facebook is made of
nothing solid, richous or even permanent.
Its power comes from numbers and by those people sharing
links posts and by doing this they change popular opinion or create there own version
of it at the prospective they want (2001). As you think of Marxism present here
you see facebook dominated all of the social devices by providing something
alittle better and giving itself a self-explanatory expansion tool “invite your
friends” by putting in your friends email and then join was one click and a few
personal details away. After that in was a tide that couldn’t be stopped and as
the numbers grew so did the conections, like in the tutorial(string theory)
people could be connected though loctions, sports and other people.

Hahaha, great picture, definitely portrays the theme of power. I too only joined Facebook because all of my friends had (although I did abandon it about a year later). I never would have imagined it becoming so large to the point that almost everybody, everywhere in the world is now connected somehow by string theory or "Mutual Friends". Facebook is definitely a fearsomely large network, and it's unsettling to know that it's possible to read the personal information of pretty much anybody in the world. This is excluding all those jungle people who live in trees and whatnot of course, and the few like me who are too anti-social to bother with Facebook. I suppose Facebook disempowers me because without it, it's much harder to keep track of what's happening on the weekend, or what my old friends are up to these days, etc. Good grief surely this is 150 words by now.
ReplyDeleteMust agree with Max, what a great picture! The man with absolute power.
ReplyDeleteJoined Facebook some years ago only to ‘spy’ on my kids…daahhh! The whole concept of collecting as many friends as possible did not appeal to me. I did however find some old school friends from Switzerland. By becoming a Facebook member, YOU give an awful lot of power to the cyber-world. Very worrying!!! I made it a point to check and adjust security settings often even though I’m not a regular user. What is the use of broadcasting to the World what I’m having for Breakfast or that I have just farted…Anyhow, this is my little rant about Facebook. I just wish more people would be aware to what’s happening to all the comments and pictures they post!
